However, there are issues with the system as well for e.g. one can't take combinations of apparently unrelated subjects for e.g. Econometrics and Medieval Slavic History (which upto a certain extent is possible in Western countries). Having said that, I don't agree with the fact that all students who opt for science don't have a genuine interest in science (They are atleast not as rare as Albert Einsteins, Chetan Bhagat or no Chetan Bhagat:)). I can't comment on pure sciences but atleast in application sciences (read engineering) I have come across such students. I had people in my batch who lived and breathed transistors, dabbling with circuits, doing projects otherwise not required as a part of the curriculum. However, after passing out many of them had to confront the realities and ended up working as "coding coolies" in one of the IT shops. The sad part is most of such genuine interest types couldn't manage to go to the US universities, reasons were manifold (as against what is the practice in the elite colleges) and most of those who managed to go to the US for a MS, had scant interest in engg. in the first place and ended up doing a MS in computer science after a B.E. in Electrical Engg.

As an aside, I had written this post on the plight of humanities in India sometime back. Though its my personal take, the topic is somewhat relevant.
http://unvanquished.blogspot.com/2009/12/indians-humanities.html

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.
Regards,
RajarshiRajarshihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00949837409466343426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14545899.post-50331213455405904282010-12-12T22:01:32.518-08:002010-12-12T22:01:32.518-08:00Previously the career options were Clerk,Doc.s and...Previously the career options were Clerk,Doc.s and engineers.
